20 phrasal verbs para el trabajo

Los phrasal verbs son combinaciones de verbo y partícula cuyo significado no se deduce de las palabras sueltas. En el entorno laboral son omnipresentes: aparecen en correos, en reuniones y en cualquier conversación de pasillo. Estos veinte son los que más se repiten en un contexto profesional.

Reuniones y comunicación

• Bring up: sacar un tema. I'd like to bring up the budget.
• Go over: repasar. Let's go over the numbers again.
• Point out: señalar, hacer notar. She pointed out an error in the report.
• Run something by someone: consultar algo con alguien. Can I run this by you before sending it?
• Catch up: ponerse al día. Let's catch up on Monday.
• Wrap up: cerrar, terminar. Let's wrap up the meeting here.

Proyectos y tareas

• Carry out: llevar a cabo. We carried out a survey last month.
• Set up: montar, organizar. They set up a new department.
• Follow up: dar seguimiento. I'll follow up with the client tomorrow.
• Look into: investigar, estudiar. We're looking into the delay.
• Sort out: resolver. Can you sort out the invoice issue?
• Draw up: redactar (un plan, un contrato). Legal will draw up the contract.
• Roll out: desplegar, lanzar. We're rolling out the new system in June.

Plazos, entregas y cambios

• Hand in: entregar. Please hand in your report by Friday.
• Fill in: rellenar (un formulario). Fill in this form before you leave.
• Put off: aplazar. The meeting has been put off until Thursday.
• Call off: cancelar. They called off the launch.
• Take on: asumir trabajo o contratar a alguien. She took on two new projects.
• Back up: respaldar (a alguien o un argumento). The data backs up his point.
• Cut back on: recortar. We need to cut back on travel costs.

Cómo aprenderlos de verdad

No intentes memorizar listas enormes de golpe: es la forma más rápida de olvidarlos. Funciona mucho mejor elegir cinco o seis que encajen con tu trabajo real, escribirlos en una frase propia —no en la del libro— y usarlos hasta que salgan solos.

Ten en cuenta además que algunos son separables (fill the form in es tan correcto como fill in the form) y otros no lo son nunca (look into). Ese detalle es el que suele delatar a quien los ha aprendido de memoria en lugar de en contexto.
